Recession Update
The recession has had a big impact locally, nationally and internationally and a number of firms have closed or have reduced the number of staff they employed.
As a result of this Coventry & Warwickshire have seen a rise in the number of people being made redundant and unemployment has risen.
In January 2010 the unemployment rates (% of people in the area claiming Job Seekers Allowance) were:
- Coventry 5.9%
- North Warwickshire 4.0%
- Nuneaton & Bedworth 5.2%
- Rugby 4.0%
- Stratford on Avon 2.3%
- Warwick 3%
- West Midlands 5.6%
Locally, jobs in these sectors have been hit the hardest:
- Manufacturing
- Construction
- Finance & business
- Retail
The current job market
Generally there are less jobs around and Jobcentre Plus has reported that the number of vacancies has reduced, however in January 2010 the Jobcentre reported it has been notified of over 3,400 vacancies in the Coventry & Warwickshire area. Currently, the areas of work with the most vacancies are:
- Sales Representatives
- Care Assistants and Home Carers
- Heavy Goods Vehicle Drivers
- Market Research Interviewers
- Sales and Retail Assist
- Cleaners & Domestics
- General Office Assistants and Clerks
- Postal Workers, Mail Sorters and Couriers
- Catering – Assistance Chefs & Cooks
- Office Assistants
